Meet fiber artist Alison Moncrieff
Dream Shape #1 (aka “Primordial Affinities”) is the first of my Dream Shape quilt series— 12 quilts based on shapes that showed up to me in a dream. I woke up that morning feeling that I’d been given an assignment, began sketching, and soon understood this would be a series exploring origin and relationship. It’s made from used, thrifted, found, and donated materials.

I’m in the process of attaching sleeves to some of the newer quilts I’m showing along with the work of @fern_royce and other artists at the @hiddenvilla sheep shearing and fiber fest on April 27. Here’s a partial view of the first three of my Dream Shape Series. I love taking the quilts out and having them breath and intermingle now and then. They get along pretty well.
At the Fiber Fest, Fern and I will be quilting and talking about our work with secondhand fabrics of all kinds. We will have a hands-on resource table for quilty endeavors using secondhand fabric. πͺ‘ππ¦

I am happy to share that I’ll be showing several of my quilts (including the first 3 of the Dream Shape quilts… π€) at Hidden Villa’s Sheep Shearing & Fiber Arts Festival two weeks from tomorrow in the Los Altos Hills. Saturday April 27 from 10 AM to 3 PM (There’s a link to register in my Linktree.) @hiddenvilla is a beautiful 1600 acre space in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. This non-profit organization delivers experiential education and practices responsible agriculture. I will be there hosting a table with @fern_royce as we demonstrate different ways to source and use secondhand fabric in quilts. There will be so much to see and do and learn there that day—sheep shearing, sustainable fashion, handcrafts, quilts!—I hope you join us.

I guess the spring color factor has been at play for awhile now… this is a #wip from green and greenish scraps plus a square of starry witchy goodness. βοΈπ€πΌπβοΈ

I am in the process of shutting down my newish surface pattern design account because I want to consolidate all the artistic versions of me, seemingly or actually contradictory or not, HERE at @alison_moncrieff_art
I contain multitudes, like all of us, and I am getting a real sense lately of what compartmentalizing relevant aspects of ourselves costs.
This is “garden gate” in the Fountain colorway from my collection of rose-related patterns “A Rose is…”
Its origins are in a few visits my daughter and I made to volunteer at #morcomrosegarden in #oakland last spring. π¦πΉ

This is number 3 pre-binding. There is much conversation around here as to what that binding will look like. Something that disappears? Something that pops? I don’t think it really matters. πππͺ‘ππΌππ€π

I’ve been enjoying hand piecing these wonky quarter-circle rectangles. I am following a rule in this arrangement, can you tell what it is? ππ€πͺ‘#quilting #piecing #handpieced #secondhandfabric #quilt #improvquilting #intuitivequilting #quartercircles
All of the quilts I make are scrappy finishes! This one is maybe my favorite quilt because we use it all the time and it has meaningful associations for me. I pieced this quilt by machine during a class I took taught by #CodyCook-Parrott and they had encouraged us to look into the quilting traditions of our own lineage. For me, this lineage would in good part be Welsh. So I did a little research about Welsh quilts, and I learned so much – the Welsh are a real masters of dense, decorative, quilting!—I incorporated colors that I would not ordinarily have chosen, such as that blue in the center and the bright red. Those colors are ones I typically actively avoid, but I love them in this quilt. I began piecing with the blue and black medallion—wool scraps from clothing— in the center. I continued on working outwards using my eye for measuring, until it felt complete. My dad who was 96 and near the end of his life had moved to my town, so I spent a lot of time at his bedside stitching (though still not as densely as a traditional Welsh quilt) while we talked, or didn’t talk, the quilt spread out over his bed. One time he said, “the colors are really quite something,” which, of course, could be interpreted in more than one way. ππ Now, we use this quilt all the time. I chose wool batting for it, so it’s light and soft and warm and makes a perfect throw. It really is my favorite quilt and I’m so proud of it. πΊπΉπ€π€πΈπ #TheWelshOne #igquiltfest2024 #scrappyfinish #quiltstory #machinepieced #handquilted #welshish #secondhandfabrics #scrapquilts #nothingnew
Fast, twisty, sometimes slow, or not like a road at all, but he is driving it. I’m so proud of this one and all his work. This is his midterm presentation —a redesign of the Citroën 2CV. @artcenteredu #artcentercollegeofdesign #autodesign #autodesigner #march2024 #ianmnash @inash.des #citroen2cv
I quilt for so many reasons. Primarily, quilting gives me space for emotional repair and allows me to sit still, processing. It keeps my hands busy, which they like. Like painting, it feeds my impulse to be true to my own vision of something. And it seems well suited to communicate ideas I receive from someplace else. I like to quilt my dreams, literally, or translate an idea that lands in my lap after having been floating around out there. I trust my self, my ideas, and my methods. It’s a medium where I can find rules I’m following unconsciously and break them to see what happens. I love taking discarded fabric and making it into something whole and possibly useful. I love working with materials that I know my ancestors grappled with too or that were previously part of a life in my local community. On a very practical level I love the whole quilting process aesthetically from the visual experience of putting materials and colors together, hand piecing to hand quilting, and the occasional machine piecing that I do. It all makes me really happy, as does curling up under a warm quilt. I guess overall quilting holds me in the present in a way that I find comforting. πͺ‘πβ€οΈ photo credit: @athousandstars #igquiltfest202 #whydoyouquilt #quilting #quilts #quilting #handstitching #intuitivequilting #makeaquilt #emotionalrepair
When I use a machine, I sew on this Elna Supermatic, circa 1952. It was my mom’s machine. I learned on it in the late 70s. I have since inherited two newer, fancier machines from her and my MIL and I just prefer this one. It’s like driving an old convertible. Solid, grounded, good visibility, reliable, build to last. And smooth. Every time I take it in for servicing, the mechanic offers to buy it. It is not for sale.ππ§΅β€οΈ #sewingmachine #elnasupermatic #igquiltfest2024 #builttolast #elnalover #quilting #piecing #makersgonnamake #therighttools #elna
